UPDATE (27 APRIL)
After news broke that this new series of comic book stories was coming, Ian Fleming Publications posted to their website to flesh out some details. The Second World War will be the period and backdrop to these new 'Origin' stories and the first adventure is coming this autumn. The comics will pick up where the Young Bond series left off, and chart "James Bond's journey from school boy to secret agent."
The major source of inspiration for this new series appears to be the obituary written by 'M' when he believes Bond to have died on a mission in Japan in Fleming's 1964 'You Only Live Twice'.
ORIGINAL STORY (22 APRIL)
Dynamite, publisher of James Bond and spin-off comics since November 2015, headlined their presentation at Diamond comic book trade show in Chicago this week with a new series of Bond strips.
The concept behind James Bond: Origin is simple, Dynamite will tell stories of a 'rookie' Bond, set before 'Casino Royale'.
Limited information is available, but Dynamite are promising to tell original stories that are "100% official" (read: approved by Ian Fleming Publications). The artists and writers have yet to be announced.
The idea is not new; it was a key tenet of the original press release announcing IFP's partnership with Dynamite back in 2014:
Dynamite plans to create a series of brand new adventures unveiling the defining - and largely undocumented - early years of Bond's career. These new stories will draw inspiration from the Fleming canon to explore Bond's 'origins': his raw early years before he gambled with his life in the first novel, Casino Royale (1953).
It is expected these stories will tell stories of Bond during the Second World War.
