Sam Mendes admits he first thought Craig was wrong for 007 role

18-Apr-2012 • Skyfall

The "Skyfall" director, and self-professed James Bond fan, admitted to the world's media recently that he initially thought Daniel Craig was wrong for the part - he was not alone.

"I was one of the people who didn't think he was good casting for Bond [when the actor was hired for 'Casino Royale']".

"I would have advised him NOT to do it."

The position that this respected director holds has certainly changed: he was openly impressed with Craig and the whole team that produced "Casino Royale", crediting the British actor with reinvigorating the 007 franchise.

Sam Mendes reinforced that he will have some subtle nods to the 50 years of the franchise that are being celebrated with the release of "Skyfall" in 2012.

He commented that the troubles with MGM gave the production team and enforced period of solid work on the script and the film is in a better shape because of the time spent.

"It was unfortunate, but it led to a much more fully-realised script," Mendes commented.
