Columbia/Sony to push ahead with 'Dragon Tattoo' sequel
After a disappointing box-office, despite positive reviews of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo", Columbia Pictures & Sony appear to be pushing ahead with a sequel.
James Bond star Daniel Craig took the lead male role as journalist Mikael Blomkvist, with Rooney Mara as the titular girl Lisbeth Salander in the Hollywood adaptation of the first of Stieg Larsson's popular trilogy of novels. Many box office analysts have pointed to the rather strange release schedule of Christmas week being one of the factors inhibiting the box office takings in December 2011.
For a while, it was speculated that the follow up - "The Girl Who Played with Fire" - may never be shot, despite the script already having been completed by Steve Zailian, as well as for the third installment.
But this week Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures, confirmed in an interview with trade paper
The Hollywood Reporter that the studio is 'pushing ahead with the Dragon Tattoo sequel'.
It is far from clear if Daniel Craig will return, but he is sure to have an option in his contract to reprise his role if he wants to and his schedule allows. There has been no word if director David Fincher is set to return, either.
