Record opening expected for 'Skyfall' in South Africa
In one of the last international territories to open, "Skyfall" is expected to do record business in South Africa when it bows on November 30th.
Isabel Rao, the CEO of Ster Kinekor distribution explained: "Skyfall is being released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Bond franchise so, in the tradition of that, it will open much wider than usual to 128 screens nationwide. That's about 38% more screens than Casino Royale."
Last time around, South Africa pulled in $1,983,685 for "Quantum of Solace", with a $391,666 opening weekend. That was down from a high of $3,198,272 for "Casino Royale".
"Skyfall" should pull in approximately $4m in the country based on how the film has performed elsewhere.
Included in the 128 screens in South Africa, "Skyfall" will also have a larger release at two of Ster Kinekor's biggest cinemas. Rather than the usual two screen 'double' for a new release, it will play on 8 of the 18 screens at Gateway and 5 of the 11 screens at Sandton City for its opening weekend.
