Pilot from Bond film dies in helicopter crash at Vauxhall Cross
A pilot who flew helicopters for the 2002 James Bond film "Die Another Day" died in a helicopter crash today in Vauxhall Cross, London, just streets away from the real-life MI6 headquarters.
Pete Barnes was flying the helicopter when it flew into a newly-built tower before hitting the ground. The accident could have been immeasurably worse as the impact landed just 20 yards from Vauxhall train station.
Mr Barnes, 50, who had also been an air ambulance pilot, was pronounced dead at the scene along with his passenger Matthew Wood, 39. 12 people on the ground were treated for injuries.
The crash site closed off a large part of Vauxhall as emergency services and accident investigators scrambled to the scene. Eye witnesses confirmed to police a swath of low cloud as the AgustaWestland AW109 twin-engine helicopter struck the under-construction The Tower St George Wharf.
