Sony secure film rights to Edward Snowden book for Bond producers

Back in October last year, James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli said she wanted to adapt 'No Place To Hide' by Glenn Greenwald, a book about NSA whistle-blower Edward Snowden. Sony have today made that possible by acquiring the rights.

"Glenn Greenwald’s No Place To Hide is a terrifying personal account of one of the most relevant political events of our time," said Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. "We are thrilled to be working with Glenn to bring this important story to the screen."

"Growing up, I was heavily influenced by political films, and am excited about the opportunity to be part of a political film that will resonate with today's moviegoers," said journalist and author Greenwald in a statement.

"Edward Snowden’s explosive revelations have raised important questions about the role of government in protecting its citizens and the balance between national security and personal freedom," said Columbia Pictures president Doug Belgrad. "We are extremely proud that Michael, Barbara and Glenn chose Sony to bring this riveting story to the big screen, and believe that Glenn’s account of this incredible international event will make for a gripping and unforgettable film."

The book ''No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State' hit shelves yesterday, but you may have to wait a while for the film treatment, with Bond 24 about to start filming in October, Wilson and Broccoli will be busy for at least another year.

But this is not the first book option that has been secured by EON Productions for a non-Bond film production in recent years that have languished in development hell. Back in 2009, Sony announced Wilson and Broccoli would produce a non-Bond movie 'Remote Control' based on the novel by Mark Burnell.
