Quentin Tarantino talks candidly about James Bond 21 in `online diary`
Quentin Tarantino started his own rumour mill about the possibility of directing a "Casino Royale" based movie with Pierce Brosnan, going back to the roots of James Bond. He grabbed worldwide media attention with his idea, but Eon Productions do not seem as keen as the majority of 007 fans to see a Tarantino-helmed Bond 21.
An online journal claiming to be that of Quentin Tarantino himself has posted this statement (note: there is no official status for this "blog" - it could be a hoax).
Update: Tarantino's publicist has denied the "blog" as a hoax to several websites covering the story.
"It looks like it definitely isn't happening. With
BASTARDS it would put filming somewhere around 2008. The producers don't want me to make the film because they're afraid I'll turn it into an ultra-violent
RESERVOIR DOGS-type-of-movie, with all my typical dialogue and no explosions. Shit if that's what they want they can have that shit, because any hack director can splice together a shitload of action and market it as a "movie." Personally I wanted to take a new direction with the Bond series, and really take it back to the roots of the character, like we've never seen before. Okay think of it this way...in 1962 they couldn't make DR. NO hardcore but it was definitely a more serious Bond film and examined the character. THUNDERBALL kind of introduced the whole goofy side to Bond as a parody can't-touch-me iconic figure and then the Pierce Brosnan Bond films just took it to the level of mediocre action flicks."
"I want to get back to the roots of DR. NO, but because it's been over 40 years, we could do so much more. We could skip the routine innuendo-followed-by-off-screen-sex and acutally introduce a deeper romantic figure for Bond. Maybe get down to the roots of who this guy is. Examine what killing people DOES to him (and show it in full detail instead of the hokey million bullets flying around). I also want to maim Bond. Like have him get shot for once and have him bleed like a normal fucking human being. Cause I think that's the way Ian Fleming originally intended Bond -- Pierce is great but his films in particular have turned James Bond into some sort of Superman figure...and I think a lot could be done with the character, in a deeper, darker, more intelligent movie than the standard blow-'em-up big-budget action "spectacular."
"Pierce wanted to make it but the producers didn't. We sat down and discussed it but they just didn't want me to do it. Now Pierce has quit playing James Bond and I think they really missed the boat. CASINO ROYALE with Peter Sellers was not an "official" Bond movie and I think this would didn't have to be, either. We could have made an "unofficial" experimental Bond film. I think it would have been a lot of fun but it just isn't going to happen now."
