US officials to get James Bond inspired cars

03-Oct-2002 • Bond News

The Straits Times have released details of new cars for US officials - that could be straoight out of Q-Branch.

The Bush administration is now involved in talks with the world`s top car makers to develop terrorist-proof cars that can be used to chauffeur VIPs at home and abroad.

In particular, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the US State Department are interested in a prototype vehicle, known as SmarTruck.

It boasts of pepper spray to clear rioters who try to block the vehicles, high voltage door handles to deter thieves, and a weapons turret which can emerge from the car`s roof.

This is reminiscent of cars seen in James Bond movies.

For example, in Tomorrow Never Dies, Bond was seen driving a BMW fitted with bullet-proof armour, missiles, anti-puncture tyres and even remote-control features that enabled one to drive without being in the driver`s seat.

According to London`s Financial Times, the US Army`s National Automotive Centre, which links the military with civilian industry is currently working on SmarTruck.

Its executive director, Mr Dennis Wend, said: "The army`s James Bond-like concept vehicle had been under development before the terrorist attacks on the US last year."

General Motors, Ford and DaimlerChrysler are involved in this project. "The big three are showing their patriotism," said Mr Wend.
