James Bond returns to Malawi with `Die Another Day` screening

30-Dec-2004 • Event

Movie houses in the country closed their doors 11 years ago for reasons that included the arrival of the video cassette. But the Warehouse, a new cultural centre in Blantyre, says it will on December 31 attempt to revive the movie going spirit - reports Nation Online.

As part of its new year’s party, the Warehouse has promised to show on big screen using what they say is a high quality projector and sound system, the latest James Bond film, Die Another Day starring Halle Berry and Pierce Brosnan.

“The rest of our equipment for the cinema like the reels arrive earlier next year but we just want Malawians to have a feel of what it will be like when all the equipment arrives,” said one of the directors Thom Chibambo in an interview.

The Warehouse is sponsored by a Germany cultural promotion non governmental organisation known as Mapa.

Generally, movie houses are entitled to show films based on a franchise from a movie production company but the Warehouse says they will be showing the films as a club.

The film show which starts at 6 PM will be followed by live performances from Malawi’s renowned musicians Isaac Mkukupha and Chechamba. Thereafter, the top disco outfit XYZ will take over.

Since it opened, two months ago, the Warehouse has hosted plays by Nanzikambe and music shows.

Thanks to `Ken` for the alert.
