James does not Bond with his audience according to Bourne Ultimatum director

21-Mar-2006 • Bond News

The Boston Herald has reported on comments made by Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass. According to the director, movie-goers find Jason more likeable than James.

Action hero-with-amnesia Jason Bourne is more likeable to movie-goers than the ever-so-suave secret agent James Bond, opines “Bourne Ultimatum” director Paul Greengrass.

The filmmaker, who just started work with Matt Damon on the third “Bourne” flick, said audiences identify more with the spy-on-the-run than the shaken, not stirred Agent 007.

Which may explain why “Casino Royale” producers are making a conscious effort to “rough-up” James Bond (played by Daniel Craig) from his glam persona to one that is more gritty, Greengrass told contactmusic.com.

“Well, you know what they say? Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” he said. “That’s honestly what I think. I think there’s a big difference between James Bond and Jason Bourne.

“I think James Bond is the secret agent who likes being a secret agent and likes killing people,” Greengrass said. “He’s a misogynist (and) an old-fashioned imperialist.”

As for Bourne, a young government operative, he’s “an outsider on the run and he’s one of us and he’s fighting against them, I think,” the director said. “That’s the profound difference, and that’s why I like Bourne.”

An unbiased opinion, of course!
