Pierce Brosnan resumes spy role in Portuguese beer ads

18-Apr-2006 • Actor News

Irish actor Pierce Brosnan, who played Agent 007 in four of the James Bond movies before being dropped from the series last year, has resumed the role of a suave spy in television ads for beer that began airing in Portugal this month - reports AFP.

The two 45-second spots "recreate situations that could have been lifted from the films which made the actor famous, namely the movies from the James Bond saga," Portuguese brewer Central de Cervejas said in a statement.

In the only spot to be aired so far, Brosnan's character uses a diamond to pay for a six-pack of the beer which he then shares with a slim young woman played by Hawaiian model Laura Mansfield over a romantic dinner.

The ads were filmed over four days earlier this year at various locations in the Portuguese capital and are part of a 7.5 million euro (9.2 million dollar) advertising campaign the company has underway for a new dark beer it put on the market last year.

The company statement did not say how much it paid for the services of the dark-haired 52-year-old actor, saying only that the two television ads cost it 2.5 million euros in total.

Brosnan made his premiere as Bond in "GoldenEye" in 1995 when he was already 42. He then starred as 007 in "Tomorrow Never Dies" (1997), "The World Is Not Enough" (1999) and "Die Another Day" (2002).

His replacement as the famous spy, blond British actor Daniel Craig, has already been signed for a second James Bond film despite some resistance from fans. He is the sixth actor to play 007 in the iconic film franchise.

Central de Cervejas, owned by British group Scottish and Newcastle, has a 40 percent share of the Portuguese beer market, mostly through sales of its Sagres family of beers.
