Sir Roger Moore honoured with `Living Legend` award from the Queen
The Queen has presented a series of awards to the nation's 'Living Legends' including former 007 Sir Roger Moore - reports
Channel 4.
Sir Roger and journalist Joan Bakewell were among the famous names who picked up a Help The Aged Living Legends award at a glittering ceremony held in Windsor Castle's Waterloo Chamber.
Sir Roger said: "It is great honour for me to be here but the important people are those that aid their friends, family and neighbours.
"I think it is great shame in our society that many older people are forced to retire when they have so much left to ffer."
The awards are designed to recognise the extraordinary and often courageous achievements of older people, as well as acknowledging the difference other generations, groups and organisations make to their lives.
The winner of the Dame Thora Hird Award for Outstanding Achievement was 82-year-old Margaret Fray, from Lytham St Anne's in Lancashire.
She has fought tirelessly for better care for elderly people suffering from mental disabilities, having cared for her Down's syndrome sister for much of her life.
She said the most anyone could do to help elderly people with such disabilities was to treat them like ordinary human beings.
"We need to give them more respect and ensure that they have the services they need as they get older. It's only what they deserve."
