Sir Sean Connery came close to soccer trials with Manchester United

20-Aug-2006 • Actor News

Sir Sean Connery came close to trialling for top English soccer club Manchester United.

The former James Bond star harboured ambitions to be a footballer from an early age and was acting with a travelling play, when one of the world's biggest clubs expressed an interest.

The 75-year-old tells British film magazine Empire, "I was travelling with the play and in each town we played soccer. "We were in Manchester for three months and Man United were interested. "But, I discussed it with a guy who was in the play who said, 'I thought you might want to be an actor. What happens if you go to soccer and you break a leg or you don't make the team?' That was the moment."
