Casino Royale ranks #2 movie in UK during 2006, still doing business

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest was the highest-grossing film of 2006 in cinemas in the UK and Ireland -reports the BBC.

The sequel, starring Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley, earned £52 million this year, nearly £8 million more than James Bond drama Casino Royale.

The movie of religious novel The Da Vinci Code came third, chart compiler Screen International said, with cartoon Ice Age 2: The Meltdown at number four.

And Sacha Baron Cohen's satirical comedy Borat completed the top five.

Borat and Casino Royale - both released last month - are still showing in many cinemas so their final totals will be higher once Christmas takings are included.

However, it appears unlikely that their chart positions will change as each is several million pounds adrift from the next most popular film on the list.

Three were three other high-profile dramas in the top 10 of the year, with X-Men: The Last Stand ranking at number six.

Superman Returns, the first film about the superhero in five years, made eighth place, while Mission: Impossible III, heavily promoted by actor Tom Cruise around the world, was ninth.

Animated comedy Cars and fashion industry parody The Devil Wears Prada completed the chart, at seven and 10 respectively.

Happy Feet has spent a second week as the most popular film in the UK and Ireland, generating £2 million over the weekend.

The cartoon about singing penguins held off Daniel Craig's Casino Royale, with Eragon, a film based on a fantasy novel, entering at number three.

Festive romantic comedy The Holiday, starring Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Kate Winslet and Jack Black, slipped one place to fourth.

And there was a new entry at five for Denzel Washington's action thriller Deja Vu.
