007`s shaken not stirred Vodka Martini helps real life Q-branch invent bio fuel cells

09-Apr-2003 • Bond News

According to NewsFactor, shaken not stirred vodka martinis may juice up both James Bond and his gadgets - say chemists who envision the fictional spy downing his signature drink and then topping off his cell phone battery with the last few drops.

To help 007 mix martinis and mayhem, however, gadget guru Q will have to replace the batteries in Her Majesty`s devious devices with so-called "biofuel cells."

"We have powered our biofuel cell with vodka and gin, so this James Bond scenario is very realistic," said St. Louis University chemistry researcher Nick Akers.

Biofuel cells, which use special enzymes to convert alcohol into energy, could replace rechargeable batteries in everything from laptops to PalmPilots, claimed St. Louis University chemistry professor Shelley Minteer. Instead of recharging in a power outlet for a few hours, these new batteries can be fueled instantly and inexpensively with a few milliliters of ethanol, a natural byproduct of corn fermentation, she explained.
