Maize maze in Devon celebrates Ian Fleming centenary
The 100th anniversary of James Bond creator Ian Fleming's birth has been marked in many ways this year, but this has to be one of the most unusual, reports
ThisIsExeter.
New for 2008, the maize maze at Bickleigh, near Tiverton, has unveiled a special Bond-themed creation. The design depicts Sean Connery, the first actor to play James Bond, and an Aston Martin DB5.
The team at the maze do a different design every summer and past designs have commemorated the Olympics, the Queen's Golden Jubilee and the South West peninsula.
Maze manager Janice Lee said: "We are a family-run business and my daughter Katie, who is 23, has been doing the maze designs for nine years.
"The maze always proves very popular with the public and we always get a lot of holiday makers visiting us.
"If it is wet then we advise people to bring wellies. And in extreme weather conditions it is best to phone ahead."
Mrs Lee remained tight-lipped about how the family transfer their maze designs onto the field, adding: "It is a well guarded secret and takes weeks of preparation."
There are lots of other attractions on offer including go-carts, table tennis, a treasure hunt complete with Bond- themed clues and an ice-cream van.
Entry is £4 per person and free for children under five years old.
