`Chitty Chitty Bang Bang` film to be remade

22-Sep-2008 • Literary

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the classic musical film based on an original Ian Fleming novel, is set to be remade - reports The Telegraph.

Michael G Wilson, who co-owns the rights to the story, has told The Sunday Telegraph that a new version is in the pipeline.

"There may be a new film of Chitty, we will have to see," he said.

The 1968 film, which starred Dick Van Dyke as Caractacus Potts, Robert Helpmann as the Child Catcher and Sally Ann Howes as Truly Scrumptious, is one of the best-loved children's films. Cubby Broccoli co‑produced the film and Roald Dahl co-wrote the screenplay, which was based on Fleming's 1964 book.

Its songs include Toots Sweet, Hushabye Mountain and Truly Scrumptious.

Barbara Broccoli launched a 2002 stage version, which starred Michael Ball and has been a great success both in London and on Broadway. It is currently on tour.

She said: "I wasn't surprised by the success of the show because so many people came up to me and said they had the original video.

"In Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Fleming created some perennial characters. The car and the whole idea of flight is something that appeals to kids of all ages.

"The show was wonderful. The number of grown men who were reduced to tears at the sight of that flying car was amazing to me."
