Bond girl Gemma Arterton talks about her character and a `Goldfinger` tribute (spoilers)
It's not unusual for Bond Girls to be bumped off in bizarre ways...but none has met a stickier end than this - reports
The Mail Online (click for pictures).
In the new 007 movie Quantum Of Solace, Gemma Artertonâs character is drowned in crude oil and her lifeless body is left draped over a bed in a scene deliberately reminiscent of the 1964 Bond classic Goldfinger.
Arterton, who plays an MI6 spy ordered to keep an eye on a renegade Bond, was covered from head to toe in sticky black liquid for the dramatic sequence.
She said: âI couldnât move. I couldnât see, I couldnât breathe or hear because it went in my ears. It was unpleasant, but itâs something Iâll always remember and it will be an iconic part of the film.â
Producers will be hoping the image turns out to be as enduring as the memorable Sixties scene which inspired it.
In the original, arch-villain Goldfingerâs accomplice Jill Masterson, played by London-born actress Shirley Eaton, is killed after betraying her boss and sleeping with 007. She is asphyxiated after her entire body was covered in gold paint.
Bond, played by Sean Connery, discovers her in his Miami hotel room lying in a position Quantum Of Solace director Marc Foster has recreated with Arterton.
This image of her is from a series of pictures from the 007 set exclusively released to The Mail on Sundayâs Live magazine, published today.
Twenty-two-year-old Arterton, from Gravesend in Kent, beat more than 1,500 hopefuls to the role of Agent Fields following her big-screen debut in last yearâs remake of the riotous St Trinianâs boarding-school comedy.
Though dispatched to keep tabs on Daniel Craigâs 007, who is out of control following the death of his lover Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale, she inevitably ends up in bed with him.
Speaking ahead of the release of Quantum Of Solace at the end of this month, Arterton said: âKissing Daniel was great â I canât pretend it wasnât.
'It was my first day on set and Iâd only met him once before, and then suddenly we were expected to kiss.
âBut I just couldnât get that image of him walking out of the sea in Casino Royale out of my head. He was very cool and I was a giggling mess. I mumbled something like,
âI just kissed you!â and he just said, âYes you did. And now we have to do it again.â
'Fortunately, heâs an incredible kisser.â
