`Quantum` gives new cinema a successful start in rocky times
When a Cineworld opened on the outskirts of Cambridge last autumn, many thought it would struggle in a time of economic uncertainty, but the Haverhill cinema's performances in its first three months has proved the doubters wrong - reports the
Haverhill Echo.
Paul Willden, the Ehringshausen Way cinema's manager, said the admission figures achieved between its opening in October and the end of January have '100 per cent' proved rumours of its struggle to be far off the mark.
He said: "We knew we were opening at a time in which the economy was struggling.
"People have come and they have come to the special events we put on and they have come to watch the films.
"It's nice to see people have come to watch the films, even if money is a little bit tight. We know we are going to have to build a profile over time."
The most watched film at Cineworld in its first three months has comfortably been the latest James Bond offering, Quantum Of Solace, which has attracted more than 6,000 viewers.
Madagascar 2 â Escape to Africa and High School Musical 3 have proved second and third most popular respectively, with both registering admission figures of more than 4,000.
The most popular film to be shown in Haverhill over the Christmas period was Madagascar 2, despite stiff competition from the likes of High School Musical 3 and Yes Man.
With Oscar-nominated films including The Reader, The Wrestler and Slumdog Millionnaire now showing and the latest Harry Potter, Transformers and The Fast And The Furious sequels set for release this summer, Mr Willden believes even better times are ahead for Haverhill Cineworld. "There are a few ideas we are working on this year on what we can offer the people of Haverhill specifically, and when we know those we will advertise them and invite people in."
