Sir Sean Connery and Alan Cumming were among the stars who turned out for the launch of the 2009 Edinburgh International Film Festival last night - reports Big Issue Scotland.

They graced the red carpet at the international premiere of Sam Mendes’s film, Away We Go, a romantic comedy road-movie.

Stars John Krasinski and Carmen Ejogo were introduced by Mendes ahead of the screening at Cineworld Fountainbridge, and celebrities who joined them for the celebrations to mark the start of the 63rd festival included Kerry Fox, Frost/Nixon star Frank Langella and Atonement director Joe Wright. Sir Sean, patron of EIFF, was accompanied by his wife, Micheline.

The festival, which this year showcases 135 films including 23 world premieres and 16 international premieres, runs until June 28.
