Bond girl Rachel Grant whips champion jockey for charity

23-Jun-2009 • Actor News

A former James Bond girl has brought a touch of glamour to an epic charity feat which has seen a top jockey walk the same mile 1,000 times - reports EADT24 (click for video).

Racing legend Richard Dunwoody is currently walking the same half-mile and back in Newmarket during 1,000 consecutive hours for 1,000 guineas.

The unique challenge - which dates back 200 years - was today backed by Hollywood-based British actress Rachel Grant who appeared with Pierce Brosnan in Die Another Day.

Ms Grant, an ambassador for one of Mr Dunwoody's chosen charities, had a novel way to keep the former jockey's spirits up during the painstaking human endurance mission - by whipping him when he got tired.

The feat - which sees the same mile walked over and over again between two points in Newmarket - was originally completed by Captain Robert Barclay Allardice 200 years ago.

The actress, who is related to the late Queen Mother, recreated a legendary tale from Capt Allardice's 42-day feat - that he was said to have been whipped to keep him awake during his historic walk.

Mr Dunwoody, who is expected to pass the 600-mile mark at some stage tonight, walks continuously between the Bedford Lodge Hotel and a post in Bury Road - getting a maximum of one hour 20 minutes sleep at any one time.

On the 1,000th mile of the challenge, Mr Dunwoody will journey up the home straight of Newmarket racecourse in time for the Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup on July 10.
