MGM take over Australian distribution from 20th Century Fox International

18-Jul-2003 • Bond News

MGM have taken control of distribution of their titles in Australia.

20th Century Fox were previously optioned to promote and distribute MGM titles in the region, including "Die Another Day".

The move is another small step for MGM to control global distribution of their titles back from partnerships. Earlier this year the company reclaimed full control of its distribution operations in the UK, France and Germany, after exercising a contractual option in its international distribution agreement with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.

ScreenDaily.com published a statement from MGM about the appointment of executive Don Hunton, who will head up a full-scale sales, marketing and distribution apparatus that is being planned for the territory:

"Don brings a wealth of valuable knowledge and experience to MGM`s Australian launch, having deftly built and managed MGM`s rental and retail sales and marketing infrastructure in the UK."

"Hands down, Australia has become one of the most vital markets in the industry.

"Australian consumers - long proven as early adopters in the consumer electronics business - are expected to spend over $1bn on video in 2003 alone, with most of the growth forecasted to come from retail DVD, a gain of more than 32%."

MGM made losses of $55.8m in the first quarter of 2003.
