Sir Sean Connery congratulates Tennis champ Andy Murray

30-Jun-2009 • Actor News

Andy Murray received a surprise phone call from former 007 actor Sir Sean Connery after he cruised into the next round of Wimbledon.

The Mirror reports that the world number three joked it was "much nicer than someone trying to sell you a phone upgrade".

Connery, 78, called Murray to congratulate him on his victory over Serbian Viktor Troicki in the third round on Saturday.

As a proud fellow Scot and keen tennis fan, the Oscar winning actor has been following Murray's progress throughout the tournament.

Murray, 22, from Dunblane, blogged on his Twitter site: "Had a phone call from sean connery - he called to say well done yesterday. Much nicer than someone trying to sell you a phone upgrade."

Earlier he was woken by his dog. He wrote: "morning. Was In a deep sleep until my dog maggie jumped on me. She's not bothered by wimbledon."

With 24 British Olympic champions watching from the Royal Box, Murray cruised into the fourth round in three straight sets, taking just one hour 36 minutes.

And Connery was not the first prominent Scot to congratulate him - triple Beijing gold medal winning cyclist Sir Chris Hoy was on hand to say well done.

Murray said: "He's a very successful guy. I didn't really know whether to call him Sir and stuff. I think I called him Chris.

"I said thanks for the support. He congratulated me on the way I played and wished me luck for the rest of the tournament."
