Spanish broadcaster La Sexta lands 'Quantum of Solace' free to air deal
MGM has signed a groundbreaking free-to-air movie deal with Spanish broadcaster La Sexta that boasts 10 James Bond titles, reports
THR.
The deal, which starts in April with a run of five James Bond titles, includes "Quantum of Solace" -- the first first-run of a box office hit La Sexta will air since its launch in March 2006.
The MGM deal is La Sexta's second high-profile signing in the past two weeks, following the three-year exclusive output deal with Warner Bros.
The deal also includes the "Rocky" and "Robocop" franchises, as well as "Conan the Destroyer."
Buttressed by coveted exclusive free-to-air rights to Spain's professional soccer league and Formula 1 motor racing, La Sexta averages about 7% audience share, but has shied away from deals with the Hollywood majors until recently.
Earlier this year, CEO Jose Miguel Contreras said the network planned to launch a second nationwide channel by the end of the year that could see part of its themed programming -- U.S. movies -- featured prominently.
