Sir Roger Moore backs Cheltenham film festival

Bond star Sir Roger Moore says the first ever Cheltenham Film Festival will have a "licence to thrill" this autumn -- reports This Is Gloucestershire.

The Hollywood actor, famous for his portrayal of superspy 007, is backing the inaugural festival, which will be staged in the town from October 1 to 3.

Sir Roger makes no secret of his anticipation to see new talent paving the way for the future of film.

"I first visited Cheltenham a couple of years ago during the literature festival and found it a charming and thriving place to be," the James Bond star said.

Sir Roger attended the festival to talk about his autobiography My word is my Bond.

"I hope the film festival generates as much buzz as the other festivals in Cheltenham do and that along with celebrating classics it might also help unearth new talent and classics of the future," he added.

The event already ahs ther support of Sir Michael Parkinson. Co-founder Adam Clarke, a graduate of the University of Gloucestershire, said: "Having the endorsement of acting giants such as Sir Roger is incredible and shows us just how important it is for Cheltenham to continue to broaden its horizons.

"Iconic characters of the big screen such as James Bond have shaped the history of film and the festival is the perfect way to celebrate both the past and future of film."

Movie fans will have the chance to see a mix of Hollywood, Bollywood and silent films during the three days.

Five screens are planned, broadcasting independent and world cinema, classic film, family movies and innovative films created by students from higher education.

A big screen could be installed in Montpellier Gardens so families can watch films with a picnic. The Town Hall will host an independent cinema, including an exclusive glimpse at the famous Pinewood Studios where Clash of the Titans and Quantum of Solace were produced.

Adam said: "Film can be hugely influential. The festival will cater for a variety of tastes, while giving budding film makers the chance to get involved and showcase their work."
