Big spenders wanted for Bassey`s gowns - Goldfinger dress and others up for auction
Dame Shirley Bassey is appealing to Britain`s big spenders tomorrow to splash out on a collection of glittering stage gowns she will be putting under the hammer at a
charity auction.
The Cardiff songbird, who is celebrating 50 years in showbiz this year, is selling her dress collection to raise money for the Dame Shirley Bassey Scholarship at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff and the Noah`s Ark Children`s Hospital Appeal.
"I feel proud knowing I wore these gowns - I`ve had great success from them and I love them all," Dame Shirley recently said of her glamorous fashion collection.
"I am thrilled my collection of gowns, so lovingly made and designed by Douglas Darnell, will help raise money for two deserving causes close to my heart."
One of her favourites, a black velvet gown with a three-dimensional orchid made from crystals, will also be auctioned as well as the gold and silver sequinned and beaded gown associated with her first hit, the 1964 James Bond theme tune Goldfinger.
The entire collection is expected to fetch more than £50,000 for the two Welsh charities.
The singer, who is the only artist to have recorded three Bond theme tunes -Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever and Moonraker - recently said, "it`s still hitting me. It`s incredible. I`m amazed I`ve lasted this long and they said I wouldn`t last.
"In school I was the girl most unlikely to succeed."
The Gala charity auction, in association with Swarovski, will take place at Christie`s, King Street, St James`s, London, on Thursday September 18, 2003 at 8.15pm.
