Daniel Craig on paparazzi, writing 'Quantum' and the 'Skyfall' team
Daniel Craig spoke exclusively to
Time Out during which he opened up about the scripting process for "Quantum of Solace", assembling a team for "Skyfall" and facing the relentless paparazzi.
It seems that the script is sometimes an after-thought on huge productions.
âYes and you swear that youâll never get involved with shit like that, and it happens. On âQuantumâ, we were ****. We had the bare bones of a script and then there was a writersâ strike and there was nothing we could do. We couldnât employ a writer to finish it. I say to myself, âNever againâ, but who knows? There was me trying to rewrite scenes â and a writer I am not.â
You had to rewrite scenes yourself?
âMe and the director [Marc Forster] were the ones allowed to do it. The rules were that you couldnât employ anyone as a writer, but the actor and director could work on scenes together. We were stuffed. We got away with it, but only just. It was never meant to be as much of a sequel as it was, but it ended up being a sequel, starting where the last one finished.â
Did you have anything to do with getting Sam Mendes on board as director [of Skyfall]?
âI did, yes, I did. Heâs English, heâs Cambridge-educated, heâs smart. Heâs lived with Bond all his life, he grew up with Bond the way I did. We grew up at exactly the same time, and I said to him, âWe have to do this together, we have exactly the same reference points, we both like the same Bond movies and we both like the same bits in the same Bond movies we like.â We sat down and we just rabbited for hours about âLive and Let Dieâ or âFrom Russia with Loveâ, and talked about little scenes that we knew from them. Thatâs how we started talking about it. Thatâs what we tried to instill in the script. Heâs been working his arse off to tie all these things together so they make sense â in a Bond way.â
Did you worry about becoming public property â tabloid fodder â when you took on Bond?
âYes, in some respects itâs unavoidable, you canât deny it. In some respects, I still fight with it now. I canât go to war with paparazzi. The Daily Mail loves saying â [putting whiny voice on] âHe never smilesâ â yeah, because I know youâre **** taking pictures of me, thatâs why. Because the Daily Mail comes to mind every time I see a camera. I challenge anybody to **** smile. Iâm just not that person.
âBut I do get it, you canât just come out and be angry. Thereâs no **** point. Youâve got to live your life. I know Iâm not that person. Iâm never going to arrive at an airport after a 12-hour flight and go, âOh, hi everyone, itâs so great to see you!â I canât do it. Youâve got to live your life, youâve got to enjoy it. And this is a great time, Iâm playing James Bond. Thatâs what makes me secure about it, Iâm having a lot of fun with it and getting a kick out of it, and people have a perception that Iâm grumpy all the time.â
