Songwriter and producer Scott Walker dies aged 76

26-Mar-2019 • Bond News

Songwriter and producer Scott Walker has died at the age of 76. In a prolific career spanning six decades, Walker had a brush with Bond back in 1999 when he performed 'Only Myself To Blame' - a proposed end title track to 'The World Is Not Enough' - written by David Arnold and Don Black. However, director Michael Apted thought the song was too much of a downbeat note on which to end the film, so the song was moved to the final track of the film's OST release.

His death was announced by Walker’s record label 4AD, which released a statement celebrating the musician’s life and work: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Scott Walker. For half a century, the genius of the man born Noel Scott Engel has enriched the lives of thousands, first as one third of The Walker Brothers, and later as a solo artist, producer and composer of uncompromising originality. Scott Walker has been a unique and challenging titan at the forefront of British music: audacious and questioning, he has produced works that dare to explore human vulnerability and the godless darkness encircling it.”

David Arnold commented on Twitter: "My heart sank like it can only do when you hear something you hope isn't true. Goodbye, Scott Walker. Anyone who has ever sung, or written, or aspired to be an artist will appreciate how incredibly important and vital Scott was. He could interpret and deliver a song like no one else. He was fearless and pure and driven and magnificent. I was beyond lucky he agreed to sing a song I’d written with Don Black that I still can’t believe he did. R.I.P."
