Cary Fukunaga's 'rapist' comment does the tabloid rounds

24-Sep-2021 • No Time To Die

'No Time To Die' director Cary Fukunaga was interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter this week and it included this little exchange about James Bond's attitudes to women earlier in the series compared to what is acceptable to today's society:

“Is it Thunderball or Goldfinger where, like, basically Sean Connery’s character rapes a woman?” Fukunaga asks. “She’s like ‘No, no, no,’ and he’s like, ‘Yes, yes, yes.’ That wouldn’t fly today.”

It was both: Pussy Galore in the hay barn in Goldfinger and Patricia Fearing in the steam room in Thunderball.

Never ones to miss a click-bait headline, the tabloid outlets were quick to jump on Fukunaga's statement and it pushed yesterday's media storm (Daniel Craig saying James Bond shouldn't be played by a woman) into the background.

The Telegraph was one of the first outlets to run with it ("James Bond was a rapist, says new 007 director") before many others followed, including The Guadian, Fox News, HuffPost, etc.
