American actor Robert Vaughn, much loved for his performance as Napoleon Solo in the hit 60's television spy-fi series 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E' has died age 83. Born in New York City on November 22nd, 1932, his father was a radio actor and his mother was a stage actress.
James Bond creator Ian Fleming was behind the concept of 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' which had previously been titled 'Solo.' Renamed and launched as Bond mania was ramping, the first episode aired in America on September 1964 with Vaughn playing alongside David McCallum.
After the show's success, Vaughn went on to star in classic movies such as 'Bullit' with Steve McQueen, and 'The Towering Inferno'.' Vaughn was also the last surviving principal cast member of the 1960 blockbuster 'The Magnificent Seven.'
Vaughn was also very popular in the UK, starring in popular series 'Hustle' and 'Coronation Street.'
Working in film and television from 1955 until this year, Vaughn had a total of 222 screen credits.
