Disney delays Mulan indefinitely, Avatar and Star Wars push a year

Major studios were expected to announce further delays to tentpole movies this week, but nobody was quite prepared to hear about so many franchises in one day.

Disney announced they have pulled 'Mulan' from release indefinitely. This follows Warner Bros finally pulling 'Tenet' from a traditional day & date release in 2020.

Immediately following that, news broke that both the Avatar and Star Wars franchises are bumping all of their movies a year down the pipe. The four (yes, four) Avatar sequels will now release in December 2022, 2024, 2026, and 2028. Thee confirmed Star Wars movies will now push to December 2023, 2025, and 2027. That leaves 2021 wide open.

The film with more release dates than 'No Time To Die', 'The New Mutants' (which Disney inherited from the Fox acquisition) is still slated for August 28th, but few expect that to happen. Some commentators joked that Disney forgot they were releasing it. 

Also elsewhere today, Ridley Scott’s Oscar-bait 'The Last Duel,' starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, bumped from Christmas 2020 to October 15th, 2021.

MI6 reported last week that MGM and Universal were considering a further delay for 'No Time To Die' from November 2020 to Summer 2021. An announcement is expected soon.

Cinemas in California and New York remain closed.
