Former James Bond contender Henry Cavill, who lost in the final round of casting to Daniel Craig back in 2005, will star in his own spy franchise headed up by director Matthew Vaughn.
Also losing out for 2006's 'Casino Royale' was Vaughn, who was up for the director job that ultimately went to Martin Campbell. "I nearly directed [it]," he admitted in 2019. "And I didn’t get the chance, but you know, if you can’t beat 'em, join 'em, or if you can’t join 'em, beat 'em, whatever the expression is."
'Argylle' is to start shooting next month in Europe with a cast that includes: Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O'Hara, John Cena, Samuel L. Jackson, and Dua Lipa - who will also write and perform the title song.
The film, based on the soon to be launched spy novel Argylle from author Ellie Conway, follows “the world’s greatest spy” ‘Argylle’ as he is caught up in a globe-trotting adventure. Cavill is signed up to play the lead for at least three films.
Vaughn said: "When I read this early draft manuscript I felt it was the most incredible and original spy franchise since Ian Fleming’s books of the 50s. This is going to reinvent the spy genre."
