George Mallaby, `TSWLM` USS Wayne crew member, dies aged 64

16-Jul-2004 • Actor News

Actor George Mallaby, who played a USS Wayne crew member in the 1977 James Bond film "The Spy Who Loved Me", has died aged 64.

Mallaby was admitted to a Gold Coast hospital last night with chest pains and died a short time later with his family by his side, reports ABC News.

He was best known for playing Detective Sergeant Peter Barnes in the 1960s TV series, Homicide and for roles in Matlock Police and Cop Shop.

Fellow actor Bud Tingwell fondly remembers the first time the pair met on the set of Homicide.

"George was part of a group of actors that I sort of never met before, accept seeing them in the odd Aussie telly that might pop up in England," he said.

"But to work with them was extraordinary because they were so flaming good.

"But last time I saw George he had had, I think, another stroke and he was less than ... physically capable of moving around.

"It was a shame because he was such a good man."
