The reefs of Bond location, Phuket, Thailand becoming endangered

21-Sep-2004 • Bond News

The reefs are being destroyed by local fishermen as well as tourists say reports. Only about 25% of the reefs are in good condition, and over half has been destroyed.

The island of Phuket played host to James Bond, in `The Man With The Golden Gun` and was the location of the villain, Francisco Scaramanga's home.

The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources has said that the surrounding waters are infested with about 10,000 tons worth of rubbish. Phuket had 4.2 million visitors last year, and so they have top make an effort to protect what little reef is left.

The Environment Minister, Mr. Suwit Khunkitti told the presses, `The amount of garbage in the sea is rising and a survey conducted this year found it had increased by 10 per cent due to the increasing number of tourists and tour groups that are irresponsibly dumping their litter.`

Since the production of James Bond was set there, Phuket has been immensely popular with tourist and some of the prime diving spots have been destroyed.

The tourist aren't the only cause of destruction, most of the blame for the damage has been put on the fishing community.
