Miramax pick up Pierce Brosnan`s Matador for $7.5m

26-Jan-2005 • Actor News

Miramax boss Harvey Weinstein has closed a $7.5 million deal for the Pierce Brosnan movie "The Matador", which premiered at the Sundance film festival.

Of late, the Hollywood studio has kept a low distribution and production profile, while a separation settlement with parent company Walt Disney is being worked out, said the Hollywood Reporter (USA).

Weinstein's presence at Sundance, often regarded as the independent film's Mecca, signalled that Miramax is gearing up for business.

The Miramax bid for festival favourite "Hustle and Flow" failed, but Weinstein beat competitors Newmarket Films and Mel Gibson's Icon Productions for the distribution rights to director Richard Shepard's "The Matador".

In the film, which also stars Greg Kinnear and Hope Davis, the former James Bond 007, Brosnan, plays a hired killer.
