`For Your Eyes Only` singer Sheena Easton talks Bond
Pop sensation of the 1980s Sheena Easton is set to entertain Malaysian audiences with her powerful vocal stylings and repertoire of memorable hits from her 25-year showbiz career.
For her long-awaited Malaysian debut, Easton will be performing two concerts, accompanied by a full band, on April 1 and 2 at Genting International Convention Centre, Genting Highlands - reports
The Star Online.
Older music fans will remember Easton as the sweet lass from suburban Bellshill in Glasgow, Scotland, with the tiny frame and huge voice who shot to fame on the back of one of the biggest number one hits of the 80s on both sides of the Atlantic, the memorable feminist pop anthem Morning Train (9 to 5).
A speech and drama student at the Royal Scottish Academy of Drama and Music, Easton, the youngest of six children, was studying by day and singing in bands at night when she was plucked from obscurity and signed to EMI Records in 1979. This was following an audition for a documentary about a budding pop star.
The resulting television film, The Big Time, about the creation of her chic image, helped her debut single Modern Girl into the British charts.
This was followed by the chirpy 9 to 5, which reached No.3 and propelled a reissued Modern Girl into the Top 10. The former sold over a million copies in the United States (known there as Morning Train (9 to 5) and topped the singles chart for two weeks.
âThe first hit for any artiste is fondly remembered,â mused Easton during a recent telephone interview from Las Vegas, where she currently resides and performs regularly.
âFor me, the song was a magical experience, one that was pure and unsullied. I was thrilled by its success because it was the culmination of years of hard work. The song has an almost fairy tale feel for me.â
At the height of her popularity, Easton was even offered the chance to sing the theme song of the 1981 James Bond movie, For Your Eyes Only, which became a US Top 5 hit.
âIn my time, it was a great honour to be chosen to do the Bond theme,â said the mother of two. âNaturally I was thrilled to be selected. Chubby Broccoli, the producer of the Bond films, personally selected me for the job, which was incredibly flattering since I was a new artiste back then.â
