What $1000 can buy the true James Bond fan
What $1,000 buys at Goldeneye, Jamaica: One night in a seafront villa with meals and drinks - reports
Courant.
For anyone with more than a passing interest in characters with names like Blofeld or Miss Moneypenny, Goldeneye is the Holy Grail. It was here that Ian Fleming wrote 13 books featuring a spy named James Bond. Located near Ocho Rios, Fleming's 15-acre estate now lives as an inn for well-healed explorers.
Owned by Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, Goldeneye includes the original Fleming house, plus four newer villas in clusters of one to three bedrooms, all facing a placid lagoon and beach. The rustic cottages are a tantalizing mix of batiks, colorful patinas on wood, jalousie shutters, creaking floorboards and hovering mosquito nets. Thick tropical vegetation conceals outdoor showers adjoining most of the bedrooms, and each villa has a media room with plasma-screen TV, CD and DVD player.
Dining offers an array of Jamaican specialties, dressed up modestly for visitors. It's not flashy cuisine, but it's satisfying and most is from local sources. Spa treatments, watersports and sightseeing can be arranged, but otherwise Goldeneye doesn't feel like a resort - it seems designed to create a private space for guests to entertain themselves, with a minimum of interaction with other guests. Comfortable chairs are positioned to maximize sunset views, and hundreds of candles illuminate the walkways and bedrooms - sufficient to spark the secret agent in your life.
The details: The one-bedroom villa is $950, including all meals, drinks, minibar, tax and service charges. Reservations: 800-OUTPOST; www.islandoutpost.com.
