Bond girl Honor Blackman launches London travel pass for the elderly

10-Feb-2006 • Actor News

London’s elderly and disabled will be able to enjoy free travel across the capital with the Freedom Pass – paid for by London’s boroughs and managed by the Association of London Government - reports 24 Dash.

Former Avengers and James Bond star Honor Blackman helped launch the 2006 Freedom Pass this week.

She was joined by the Association of London Government’s Vice Chair, Councillor Tony Newman, to promote the scheme, which is the most comprehensive free travel service in the country and is funded by London’s boroughs.

More than a million older and disabled Londoners currently take advantage of the Freedom Pass which helps them to live as independently as possible.

Councillor Newman said: “The Freedom Pass is about much more than just helping London’s older and disabled people get around London.

“It is brilliant example of London boroughs working together to help give members of their community the freedom to live as independently as possible.

“I am delighted that thanks to the generosity of London’s boroughs we have been able to continue this scheme into its 22nd year.”

Honor Blackman, who holds a Freedom Pass, said: “The Freedom Pass can have a significant effect on changing people’s lives for the better.

“It is a wonderful scheme that not only allows people to travel across the capital free of charge, but it also reduces their dependence on others to get them out of their homes.”

The Pass allows disabled people 24-hour free access to London’s tube, bus and tram services and on national rail services in the capital after 9.30am.

Londoners aged 60 or over can travel free on the tube, bus and tram services after 9am and on national rail services in London from 9.30am.

At the weekends there are no time restrictions on either pass.
