Dame Judi Dench named as new theatre president

Dame Judi Dench is to become the new President of Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts (UK), in succession to the late Sir John Mills.

Announcing the news, Mountview’s Chair, Sir Alan Cox, said that he and the Board were ‘absolutely thrilled and delighted that Dame Judi has agreed to take this role in helping to shape our future. We have far-reaching plans for the development and relocation of Mountview and it’s tremendously encouraging that we have someone of Dame Judi’s enormous distinction on our side at this exciting but crucial time.’

Paul Clements added that Dame Judi’s Presidency will be a huge boost for everyone connected with the Academy: staff, students and graduates. ‘To have the support and good will of an international artist of Dame Judi’s calibre gives us confidence in the value of our work. It’s wonderful to have it recognised by a person who is so loved and respected all over the world not only for the quality of her work, but also for her decency and humanity.’

Dame Judi has enjoyed a long association with Mountview as a patron and in 2000 the University of East Anglia, who validate the Academy’s BA and MA Performance courses, awarded her an Honorary Doctorate at Mountview’s Degree Ceremony.
