James Bond`s new Aston Martin DBS not available to buy yet

18-May-2006 • Bond News

Aston Martin, fresh from the success of its DB9 and V8 Vantage models, has expanded its supercar portfolio once again with the DBS. For now, though, it’s for your eyes only - reports Times Online.

Daniel Craig will drive the DBS as the new James Bond in the upcoming film Casino Royale, due for release in November. While details of the car remain guarded and production hasn’t been announced, Aston says the DBS is a racier version of the DB9 and more connected to the DB9R race car, which won the FIA GT championship last year.

Smooth and graceful curves have been injected with deeply-cut front and side flanks, two more vents and added strakes to the bonnet, and a large air dam below the signature grille. Certainly there must be more power on tap than the 450bhp V12 in the DB9, but the company so far refuse to discuss specifications. It’s even possible that the DBS might encroach upon the flagship 520bhp Vanquish, the car Pierce Brosnan piloted in Die Another Day.

While Aston says it’s “just a car for James Bond”, the DBS could easily see the green light. If anything can be gathered from past Bond cars – such as the Lotus Esprit and Sean Connery’s Aston Martin DB5 - it’s their star roles that help boost sales. When BMW launched its Z3 roadster in the 1995 film Goldeneye, all first-year production sold out before 007 even left the cinema.

Aston Martin is already toying with the four-door Rapide concept it unveiled early this year in Detroit, and the car looks ready to challenge the Mercedes-Benz CLS, Maserati Quattroporte and Bentley Continental Flying Spur. The company won't reveal the Rapide’s future either, but come next year there will likely be another, if not two, new Astons on the street.
