Pierce Brosnan becomes a lucky charm for Wimbledon players (photos)

08-Jul-2007 • Actor News

Former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan and his wife Keely Shaye Smith watched the Women's Singles semifinal between Venus Williams of the US and Ana Ivanovic of Serbia, on the Centre Court at Wimbledon, on Friday July 6, 2007.

Brosnan also caught the semi-final match between top seed Justine Henin and 22-year-old Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli.

Marion, inspired by a former James Bond, came back to create one of the biggest ever shocks in the history of the tournament by taking the next two sets 7-5 6-1. I saw Pierce Brosnan in the crowd, which is one of my favourite actor. I love his movies,” she explained in the press interview room. I said to myself, it’s not possible to play so bad in front of him. Because he watch me and I play so bad it was unbelievable. So I try to feel it a bit more, the ball, play more smartly. I saw he was cheering for me, so I said, ‘Oh maybe it’s good.’ I kept going and I won, so maybe a little bit for Pierce Brosnan."

Brosnan later met (eventual winner of the men's tournament) Roger Federer. Brosnan talked to defending Wimbledon Men's Singles Champion Federer just before an interview for television.

When it came to the women's final, sadly for Marion, her 007 inspiration Pierce Brosnan was a no show. He sent flowers instead. Venus Williams triumphed in the final 6-4 6-1.
