`The Cultural Politics of Ian Fleming and 007` conference to be held at Indiana University this month

In an effort to honor the author and scholar, Ian Fleming, the English Department of Indiana University Bloomington campus will host the first ever Fleming academic symposium, The Cultural Politics of Ian Fleming 007, which will correspond with the 50th anniversary of the publication of Casino Royale.

The conference takes place on May 29th 2003 through to June 1st 2003.

Renowned national and international scholars from a broad range of academic disciplines including literature, history, gender studies, modern culture and communications have been invited to present.

The subject of the Symposium will serve as a springboard for participation in an array of activities. The Lilly Library will mount a public exhibition of rarely seen Fleming and Bond materials*. Symposium participants will have an opportunity to attend a private reception hosted by the Lilly Library in which materials not available for public viewing can be seen. Throughout the weekend continuous screening of Bond films will occur at a local theatre, the Buskirk Chumely, in downtown Bloomington. The Buskirk Chumley theatre will also serve as the venue for a special screening of the 1954 film Casino Royale - with discussion to follow. Vehicles from two Bond films will be on-site and available for viewing.

The scholarly discourse of The Cultural Politics of Ian Fleming and 007 combined with the archived Fleming/Bond materials housed at the Lilly Library augmented by interesting and enjoyable public and private activities located on the campus of a distinguished and physically beautiful university represent an assembly of components of what promises to be an emphatically distinguished and noteworthy event.
