Top tailor says Brosnan`s Bond would be better suited at Savile Row

25-May-2003 • Bond News

The People newspaper (UK) have reported that one of the world`s top tailors has launched a campaign to get 007 star Pierce Brosnan to ditch his sleek Italian suits.

Oswald Boateng, whose client list reads like a Who`s Who of the rich and famous, claims James Bond has a duty to back Britain when it comes to his wardrobe.

Bond creator Ian Fleming clad his hero in the sartorial elegance of London`s Savile Row when he drew up the secret agent`s classic look in the 1950s.

But Brosnan`s Bond broke with that tradition in GoldenEye by opting for hand-made outfits from Romans Brioni.

The company produced 30 suits for Pierce`s last outing in Die Another Day - each costing around $3,000.

A master tailor and his team were present throughout the filming to ensure each suit fitted him to perfection.

Pierce, now 50, is said to be a big fan of the finely-honed Brioni look and has won plaudits from the fashion world for his impeccable appearance as Bond.

But Boateng, who has a studio in Savile Row as well as outlets in Paris and New York, insists it is high time the world`s most famous secret agent got back to his fashion roots.

He is pressing the Irish star to choose Savile Row tailoring when filming starts on what is likely to be his final Bond appearance later this year.

"Traditionally Bond wears Savile Row suits," said Boateng. "But Pierce has been wearing Italian suits. We need to get him back to Savile Row. It was bad enough to see him driving a BMW on screen let alone wearing an Italian suit.

"He should be representing Savile Row."

But Lindy Hemming, head of costume design on the Bond films, said it was odds on Pierce would stick with the Italian look for the next movie.

"The Brioni clothing that Pierce wears establishes the James Bond character as a totally modern man of international taste, dressed in classic but contemporary proportions," she said.
