George Lazenby is licensed to kilt again, after standing in for his predecessor

29-Nov-2003 • Actor News

The Dewar`s Dressed to Kilt fashion show in Los Angeles was designed to put Scottish dress firmly on the map - but the absence of one 007 was more than made up for by another Fleming incarnation.

The Scotsman claim Sir Sean Connery was sadly unable to make it because of an eye operation, but one-time 007 George Lazenby proved an admirable stand-in not least by his determination to thrust dollar bills at the very attractive females who sashayed down the catwalk of the art-deco surroundings of the Wiltern theatre, near downtown LA.

When not trying to woo one of the supermodels on show, George, who was supposed to be judging the clothes, said he was planning an imminent Scottish golfing trip.

"At the moment I live in LA and am trying to get my handicap down from nine," said George over a "whiskytini" - shaken not stirred of course.

"I played Turnberry last year in the wind and am planning on doing St Andrews and the east coast next year. I’m not quite sure what I am supposed to be wearing with this blue type tartan and trainers but I just wear what I’ve been given. I think kilts do look great on the right man."

The private after-show party was held a 30-minute car journey away at the palatial surroundings of TV producer Caryn Mandabach - who is said to have outbid Sir Sean for the house.

There, at the start of a night that went long into the small hours, guests were greeted with the surprising home comforts of bangers and mash and apple pie.

Sir Sean Connery recently slammed Eurocrats for declaring the kilt `womenswear`.
