It's the latest trend with younger celebrities, but 87-year-old Sir Sean Connery has also joined the ranks of those taking out legal protection on their own name.
Sir Sean Connery has filed paperwork with the EU and US intellectual property organisations to trademark his own name in an effort to prevent others from using it for profit. If successful, Connery will be able to licence rights to third parties and opens up a potentially lucrative revenue stream.
Trademarks are not blanket protections and those filing must choose which product and service categories relate to the mark. Connery has applied to cover DVDs, books, games, clothing, and a range of memorabilia that includes cocktail shakers, bottle openers, shot glasses, wine glasses, bumper stickers, oven mitts, greeting cards, toilet paper, toothbrushes and napkin holders.
If successful, it may cause a headache for Bond related products that use his name in the titles, such as the recent 'Sean Connery Collection' Blu-Ray and DVD mini box-sets.
