James Fleming, Ian's nephew, has died aged 80

27-Nov-2024 • Literary

Author James Fleming, nephew of James Bond creator Ian Fleming, has died at the age of 80.

A novelist and historian, he was born on July 15, 1944, into a family steeped in literature. The son of Peter Fleming (Ian's brother), a celebrated travel writer, and the acclaimed actress Celia Johnson, he was raised amidst an atmosphere of intellectual curiosity and artistic expression. While Ian Fleming's shadow loomed large, he forged his path, establishing himself as a significant literary voice in his own right.

Over the course of his career, Fleming authored several novels, including Cold Blood (1999) and the acclaimed Charlie Doig series, which blends historical adventure with sharp, vivid storytelling. His works are marked by meticulous research, a keen sense of place, and a talent for immersing readers in worlds far removed from their own. The Charlie Doig novels, set in early 20th-century Russia, have been particularly praised for their authenticity and gripping narrative.

Beyond his contributions as a novelist, Fleming was a devoted steward of his uncle Ian's legacy. His deep respect for the Bond creator's work manifested in thoughtful reflections and interviews that often illuminated Ian’s creative process and personal life. His 2021 book, Bond Behind The Iron Curtain, examines the Russian critique of Ian Fleming.

Since 2018, he was the editor of The Book Collector. In 2023, an issue was devoted to Printing and the Mind of Man in which Fleming reviews the correspondence of Percy Muir and John Carter, key organizers of the exhibit.

James Fleming passed away on November 25, 2024, at the age of 80.
